Hello all, I had a buddy contact me (dchiu) wanting his 1911 coated. I have a background in automotive painting so I said I would give it a shot (pun intended). I chose Cerakote because I am impressed with its durability and how thin it goes on. This will be a project as I just received the Cerakote today. I plan on taking it to work to soak it in brake clean and blast it per the instructions then bring it home and spray it in the garage since the paint booths do not get hot enough at work, gotta use the oven. On to the pix, It will be receiving a two tone black and satin aluminum finish.

    Enjoy! Jon

    There's my Para-Ordnance P14-45!

Those pictures are pretty impressive! I can see everything very clearly.
Anybody know any good addtions that would support the double stack magazine? Triggers, hammer, grips? I find it hard to come by. If anyone have any other ideas what we could do with this fine piece let us know!

Thanks to RustyHornet for the pictures and the work.

Just got back from the shop with RustyHornet. The parts that are going to be painted have been cleaned and sandblasted, awaiting painting.

    Pics soon to come!

After this is done I would like some nice wood grips on this. Considering this is a double stack and the P14 grips are much thinner, anyone know where I can find any? Most that I am finding online is the standard 1911 grips.

    dchiu,

Check Hogue grips (getgrip.com) and the Para Pro Shop (paraproshop.com), Hogue has a nice selection of woods and Para has some very nice G10 grips. The P14 should look awesome!

I'll be following this. I will probably have mine done since I don't have access to the proper blast media and my oven is gas.:)

Thanks for noticing the pix, took me awhile to set them up. Got the majority of the parts blasted with aluminum oxide today after letting them soak in brake cleaner for 15 mins. I'm trying to come up with a game plan for getting these parts coated and then baked.

Of course dchiu was crying the whole time as I destroyed his gun...:dunno:

More to come as I figure out the best way to do things.

    Enjoy! Jon

The only thing I could say is make sure you have absolutely no oils on the surface be it from your hands or anything else before coating it. Having an automotive painting background I'd hope this is obvious for you, just just throwing it out there either way.

Yeah I'm gonna be extra careful with this. I plan on soaking it again when I'm ready to shoot and the directions state to bake it after soaking to burn away any leftover brake clean.

P.s. Mike, whenever I see your Wilson 1911 I drool! Love that gun you have, enjoy it!

I'd probably stick with rubbing alcohol for removing the oil. I'm not sure what is in brake cleaner - it's supposed to not leave a film/oil but I know for sure that rubbing alcohol will not :).
