its great to see that unarmed people can take back their country and throw the police and politicians out while our libs tell us we cant even do it with guns...

i wonder what its like to buy a gun in egypt today***or what the sales tax is***or what the speed limit is***or what the seatbelt laws are***or what the license plate laws are???

im loving this egypt thing***i get nothing but hope out of it...
Hmm....let's see. It's abnormally hard to get a firearm in Egypt, damned near impossible and the ones you can get your hands on are invariably junk guns. No sales taxes that I can remember. No true speed limits or suggestions, but traffic's a stone b**ch. Hard to get up to speed unless you're out in the country or driving really late at night. No seat belt laws. All cars do have to have a license plate, tho. Not terribly expensive and once people have it, it tends to become a one time affair, unless you're caught in a serious accident and the law becomes involved.

I hope that does happen and not have it degenerate further into a cesspool.
Actually, Egypt's far from a cesspool. It's a beautiful place with really great people, (who truly like Americans. Despite our unrelenting support for their dictator). The folks there just want freedom and a free economy (which they do have, they just want more. They love capitalism!). Personally, I hope there's a major change and look forward to going back one of these days, if there is.

Oh, they have taxation. Sales taxes would just be too hard to collect. They have a thriving counter-economy that's not run by the state, unlike our country. If you want to set up a shop there, you just find a place and set up, (paying the appropriate baksheesh to whomever needs it). Bridges are a popular site for folks to set up. They pull in carts and trucks and tables and go to it. More free than us, in some regards, but make no mistakes. It's a police state and you can be disappeared, tortured and murdered by the government. It happens all too frequently. I'm just happy the Army seems to be siding with the protesters.

So modern day history tells us uprising in predominantly muslim countries lead to free countries?
Egypt isn't like most other Arab countries and radical islam has never managed to gain the traction that it has in other places. Primarily because the people wouldn't put up with it. They like having a secular government and have seen what non-secular government in other countries have led to. Egyptians want no part of it, and neither do their clerics (Cairo is THE center of learning in the Islamic world via Al Azhar University). Egypt will be just fine, as will Tunisia.

You are in for a rude awakeing.

    Ayman al Zawahiri
    Egyptian Islamic Jihad
    Army of Islam
    Muslim Brotherhood
7 of 22 on the FBIs most wanted terrorists are Egyptian.

Your future predictions are pure fantasy.

Last time I checked Zawahiri was hiding in a cave in Pakistan, not running for office in Egypt. Nice try. And almost all of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis. It still doesn't mean anything or have anything to do with what's happening in Egypt today.

The point is Egypt has a long history of terrorists.

Everyone knowledgeable of Egyptian affairs knows this could be a turning point for the islamic extremists to take control in Egypt.

There have been Egyptians who were terrorists. There have been Irishmen who were terrorists. There have been Saudis and Israelis who were terrorists. There have been Americans who were terrorists. Egypt has no more a history of terrorists than many, if not most, other countries in the region and in other places. This current situation isn't being driven by radical islam, which you'd know if you knew anything about it and knew anything about Egyptians in general. Even organisations like Hamas are keeping silent right now, because they realise that this is NOT an islamic uprising, anymore than a protest that has baptists is a baptist uprising.

    Wrong.

    Hamas is happy.

PA officials express concern over events in Egypt

And that would be new. Glad to see they're on the right side and not siding with a dictator. Oh, in case you didn't know it the PA is not Hamas, in fact they're in opposition to them. Interesting to note that the PA is backing Mubarak. Says a lot more about them. Even bad guys can side with the right every now and again.

Save the condescension and try to keep up.

I was posting about Hamas and the article had comments from HAMAS.

mj is always right. He was a State Department civilian contractor educated by Canadiens whist living in Japan. He's an expert on foreign affairs.
