Just let the gunk burn off and scrap them with the tool provided. If it starts to build up, take the emitter out, flip it over, and tap the carbon out of it.
I also read some people will run them through the self-cleaning cycle of their oven once a year or so, but I don't thing that's necessary. 15min on high with the lid closed and the emitter plates are glowing red.
