I bought a cheapo foam & plastic case at Gander Mt. for like $10.

I travel a lot and it protects my handgun just fine while it's in my suitcase.

As noted, leaving your gun in a plastic case will promote rust-has damaged alot of guns. A soft padded case of breathable fabric is my favorite for short term use,but they likely trap moisture to a degree also.

Foam filled cases sticks to gun steel when stored. Lambs wool isn't good either. Fabric seems better, but remove the firearm and wipe it down on occasion. Gun sleeves are pretty cheap and when stored in a dry spot seem ok. (watch out for the foam ones, would not use see above.) I kinda like the ones you can secure, and use a small combo lock. Not a real secure deal, keeps prying fingers and eyes off the firearms then store in your safe.
