Chileno Mauser 1895

A neighbor stopped by tonite and asked if I could tell him what caliber his Mauser was, I mic'd it and it was 6.980 or close to it. It's kinda hard to get it accurate. I'm guessing it is 7 mm, but not sure. Looks like it has been some what sporterized. Anyway I was hoping someone could shed some light on what caliber this gun is. Guns Illustrated has a Chinese Mauser in 7.9 x 57, but thats to big. Any ideas?

I had one and it was 7x57 but to be sure he should take it to a gun smith.

7x57 and a damn fine shooter. I love mine.

Thats what I figured, thanks for the help. Definetly will get it checked out before he puts a round thru it, just to make double sure.

Some were converted to 7.62x51. If it was it would be stamped somewhere on it.
