Simple. Fire him, charge him (if there is an applicable statute) and provide training to the remaining officers of the agency.

There's no training that could get the stupid out of this officer. I'm all for law enforcement and respect what they do for our community but this is totally inexcusable.

    .- ...- --- -.
Be interested to hear the rest of the story. The officer was "distraught". OK, where do we go from here ? Was he suspended ? Reprimanded ? Is the city going to fix this guy's window and buy him a new dog ?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

Question - Are cops shooting more dogs, or are reporters focusing on it more?

In most of these situations, the reasoning is VERY loose, and in hindsight typically ends up that the cop made the wrong choice.

Is this just an outlet for the trigger-happy officers that haven't had a chance to shoot a person? So they want to thrust their authority on an animal? Or are they truly feeling threatened (when there's a car door and glass between them)?

You know how they look back on serial killers and maniacs and see they tortured animals in the beginning? Yeeeeah.

Also, don't get the wrong idea. I rarely, if ever, post cop-bashing threads... but things like this just **** me right the **** off.

Interesting, the PD says it was a 'pit bull' but the owner says it was a labrador?

Labradors are ALL 'people friendly' and NEVER have lunged at or attacked anyone, ever?

The owner more-or-less admitted that the dogged likely made some aggressive movement if the Officer approached the van which, from the article, the LEO did in the line of duty.
NOT saying the LEO was justified, but the owner somehow claiming a lab is 'automatically' a 'gentle' dog is :bs:

    IF it was a labrador.

Number one,I absolutely hate the stigma on pit bulls. It's just like the stigma on ARs and AKs.A dog is a dog.Why can't people understand that they will protect their owner and their territory whether they're a tea cup chihuahua or a saint bernard?Doesn't anyone understand the phrase 'guard dog' anymore?

Number two,why didn't the officer simply back away to assess the threat?

Number three, would he have shot a person who leaned forward from laying back in the seat taking a nap?

This officer seems to have been too trigger happy.Hope that all parties get what they deserve.
