I have several firearms that I rarely shoot, and I'm wondering what the current thinking is on long term storage.
At present the guns (long and pistol) are stored in socks, and get inspected every 6-12 months. Most were originally put up with a coating of CLP. I don't use CLP for lube and cleaning any more and the last of my stash it about gone. I'm planning on cleaning off all the CLP and going with something that I can hopefully leave on for years without worry. Yeah, I'll still worry and check them... but I don't want to feel that I have to check them on a regular basis.
I'm not going to go full cosmoline, but I don't mind needing to clean/remove excess before firing. I'd prefer not to have to keep them in sealed bags as I do tend to shoot them, but I'd like to get 3+ years of worry-free protection.
CLP has performed well in my temperature controlled environment, but is there anything better? How do the newer Froglube paste type products stack up? I specifically mention Froglube paste as I was given a big tub of the stuff...
Here's what I'm considering. Removing all CLP, then coating with froglube. Wrapping froglubed weapon in VOC paper and inserting back into gun sock.
