I am looking for a decent powder scale for under 125.00 . I just threw away my old cheap scale and do not want to go through that mess again with another cheap one . I am not into reloading but need it for measuring smokeless powder for my muzzleloader. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I just got a 0.001g scale. I haven't tested it yet, but I was planning to post results when I did.

BTW it cost me ~$20 shipped, and it is IDENTICAL (except for the logo) to an American Weigh scale that runs about $74-$85 most places.

I have a $1500 Ohaus scale to comapre it to in the lab here.

0.1g scales are routinely sold as "reloading" scales on ebay but 0.1g is not near enough resolution for weighing gunpowder. A 0.01g scale is close, but will not always resolve 0.1 gr. A 0.005g or 0.002g scale is what it takes to resolve to 0.1 gr.

A milligram (0.001g) scale will theoretically resolve to approximately 0.02 gr.

FWIW (you probably know this but others reading might not) blackpowder equivalents like Pyrodex, etc., are loaded by volume equivalent not by weight.

I still use my RCBS balance scales, working good after 35 years. I think they can be had for less than $125.

I have used an RCBS 505 powder scale for the last 25 to 30 years. They are accurate enough to load match ammo with that wins 1000 yard matches. I also have an RCBS 1010 scale that is good as well. I just feel my 505 is slightly more sensitive. So I use it. Just keep them clean and dust free and they will last a long time.

Thanks guys, I think I will look into the RCBS 505. Has anyone had any experience with the RCBS 750 ? Cabelas has them for 107.00 I think.

RCBS 505 here as well nothing but good to say about it. I bought it to replace a nonmagnetic older Redding that worked good it just took it forever to finally quit bouncing.

I've used the RCBS 5-10 scale for about 25 years and was never let down. However, I bought a Lyman 1200DPS3 about 4 months ago and I love it. I hope I won't have to go back to the 5-10. Later, Bob

On a whim, I picked up a Frankford Arsenal electronic scale at a gun show. Having heard some really mixed reviews about electronic scales, it took a long time for me to have any confidence in this scale, but it hasn't let me down yet. Generally, I'll use it to set my powder charges quickly and then double check on my RCBS 505.

I have the RCBS 502 scale. It is a 2 poise scale and the 505 is a three poise scale. I love the 502 it is quick and accurate and I scored it for about $40 on ebay NIB. I was looking at electronic but there are so many good and bad reviews, I just went with the trusty beam scale. I haven't regretted it so far.

I've got one of the earlier Prometheus scales and they are tough to beat.
Of the balance beam scales, I've used Dillon, Hornady and RCBS. They are all fine.

I still haven't decided what the guy was calling "six sigma"? Cpk, Cp? He had his terms messed up.
Six sigma, Cpk, and Cp are all terms relating to statistical variation. Basically, no 2 things are identical, so it is a reference of how much variation exists between them. Hope this helps.
