Flannel is my favorite, but I have used plenty of USGI issue patches as well as southern bloomer co doubleknit scraps. I have also cut up old "T" shirts. One thing you will run into is sizing of the jags in smallbore (6mm and under) rifles. If a brand of jag is sized for those thin synthetic patches from Outers company and you use thick flannel, you will probably have a tough time and get it stuck. Give your jag a try first, if it gets stuck pretty fast, abort the plan and either resize your jag or use thinner patches.

I chucked some of my jags in a drill motor and spun them against a file until they were thin enough to allow a thick patch to be pushed through my rifle barrels.
