I'm not sure it's better in this case.
The result is the same, robber running away when met by someone who refused to be a victim (either armed with fists or armed with a gun).
But with the gun the shop owner might have dammaged his hearing, might have a few bullet holes in the shop, possibly blood on the floor to clean ...

The guys fighting had hundreds of opportunities to get shot during that interaction. It's a freaking miracle they are both not dead truthfully.

When the robber picked up his gun he was a threat again. I would have shot him in the head & dropped him right there.
