I'm looking to do some hunting out west Elk and Muley and was wondering what packs people have used from their own experience or someone they know. I plan on on bivy camping so I'll be living out of my pack. I'm leaning towards Eberlestock but I'm open to anything. I'd like to keep the price under $500 but prefer under $400.

Also any other specific gear/brand suggestions would be appreciated.

For tough hikes I much prefer Kifaru. I mostly use a Highcamp 7000 for long hunts and a Spikecamp for overnights, with cargo chairs. Both highly comfortable and plenty tough enough to pack out meat over and over and over.

I also like Mystery ranch but don't have as many miles on the Crewcab I have. A hunting buddy of mine swears by their 6500 in3 hunting pack. As with a lot of packs, they tend to run heavy so what I've never seen as any gain over Kifaru. If launching short day trips out of a base I can live with them but not full on walk ins.

I'm always on the lookout for light packs that can hold up and to that end I am thinking about getting a Stone Glacier pack before my next trip. I ran across a guy with one while on a stopover earlier this year, and they have the vest look/feel I've seen for a lightweight.

It's old school but served me very well the six year I was stationed in Colorado. Army Alice pack with the upgraded pads and straps and the removable bottom shelf. You can get a complete set up for less than 100 bucks and is reliable as a 2x4. The medium size pack works great and it's easy to take the pack off the frame to use the frame to pack out an elk. Just my 2 cents but again it worked great.

We took 6 of the marine packs up to BWCA last trp and they also worked outstanding. Only thing is with a traditional ruck you get a pack frame for bringing out quarters....
