    In ancient times (lol) before 'Use by Dates' unless the can was leaking or had exploded we pretty much ate what was in it unless it smelled, was molded or looked bad. Acidic things like fruit, or tomatoes would usually leak the can first. Glass or lined tin containers hold the seal much better than plastic. I've eaten 15 or 20 year old jelly (maybe even older) preserved in glass. It may be darker in color but tastes fine.
