Sorry - my search-fu has always been white belt on this site.

What are the essential knots? A couple of years ago I found myself very angry at myself because I needed a way to tie something down and was forced to wrap and tie half hitches. I have about ten to twenty knots in my kit now, some more certain than others.

What are your ten most essential knots?

"On Rope" Is a book I used to have years ago when I was into rock climbing. LOTS of info in there with useful knots of all types.

Probably one of the most important of all.

I can tie a bunch of knots for about ten minutes after I practice while looking in a book.

Afterward, I can still do a square knot, a slip knot, two half hitches, and a bowline (if I experiment a little).

    Gotta include the sheet bend.

Really have to think about what you want to do though. There are unique knots to different things like sailing, climbing, lumbering, etc. Maybe a good way to approach it would be to pick a knot or two to accomplish common tasks like making a loop, joining two lines together, attaching a rope to something, etc.

Like Rhino, the brain is fleeting in memory. I added the "3D Knots" app to my phone and LOVE it. Of course you look like a weenie if you have to pull out your phone to remember a knot, but eventually it should sink in! I have learned some pretty cool stuff from the app though.

Android users can get the "Pro-Knot" app. Long list of fishing and rope knots, with step by step instructions for each and an animated clip of each.
Most of my knot tying comes in during fishing and boating so I'm partial to the palomar and cleat hitch.
