    Not a polymer bullet

    From the linked advertisement.............
"Federal® Guard Dog 40S&W Ammunition is a premium home-defense round with Federals Expanding Full Metal Jacket (EFMJ) construction. The bullet is filled with an expanding polymer.................."

Sounds like Federal's response to the Hornady Critical Defense ammo.

    This video is probably best

FYI that review says it FAILs in terms of penetration and expansion damage.

    Good job, Jedi!
I was pleasantly surprised at how well done the testing was. Most "homegrown" terminal ballistic testing is just about useless, as they violate testing protocols and scientific methodology. This was a delightful anomaly!

The "guard dog" ammo performed just about the same as most lightweight bullets--underpenetration, when 12" is minimum, with 16" - 18" being optimal. However, the gel calibration in this video was low at about 3" which means a correction factor would make the penetration slightly more than actually measured, but nowhere near the 12" minimum.

Again, great job, Jedi, and here is a listing or semi-auto handgun ammunition that meet or exceed proper terminal ballistic testing:

    9 mm:
Barnes XPB 115 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP (LE9T1)
    Federal HST 124 gr +P JHP (P9HST3)
Remington Golden Saber 124 gr +P JHP bonded (GSB9MMD)
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP
Winchester Partition Gold 124 gr JHP (RA91P)
    Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)
    Winchester Ranger-T 127 gr +P+ JHP (RA9TA)
    Federal Tactical 135 gr +P JHP (LE9T5)
Federal HST 147 gr JHP (P9HST2)
Remington Golden Saber 147 gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Speer Gold Dot 147 gr JHP
    Winchester Ranger-T 147 gr JHP (RA9T)
Winchester 147 gr bonded JHP (RA9B/Q4364)

    .40 S&W:
Barnes XPB 155 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Speer Gold Dot 155 gr JHP
Federal Tactical 165 gr JHP (LE40T3)
    Winchester Ranger-T 165 gr JHP (RA40TA)

    .45 ACP:
Barnes XPB 185 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal HST 230 gr JHP (P45HST2)
    Federal HST 230 gr +P JHP (P45HST1)

Anyone try this "new" ammo for home defense by Federal?
    Federal Premium Ammunition

Has a polymer round to help expansion and designed not to over penetrate?\
Sound like a lot of :bs: and marketing.

    -Jedi
Seems to me that this round was made specifically for HIGH DENSITY CITIES and URBAN AREAS where over-penetration is a real issue . . . and hollowpoints are illegal.

BUT MOSTLY, this round is a non-hollowpoint that works pretty much like a hollowpoint. That means it is LEGAL to use in those HIGH DENSITY CITIES and URBAN AREAS where it is illegal to use hollowpoint ammunition because their idiotic politicians bought into the lie that hollowpoint ammo is really "cop killer" ammo.

So yes, it is a lot of marketing.

But when you have government making silly rules then you need to have ways to offer consumers legal means to get around those same stupid rules. There are other rubber plugged hollowpoints on the market. This just adds to the selection for those who cannot legally possess hollowpoint ammo.

. . . here is a listing or semi-auto handgun ammunition that meet or exceed [strike]proper[/strike]arbitrary terminal ballistic testing
    Fixed your quote for you.

NIFT note that I did not do the testing. I just found those videos online.
I think I'll stick with Hornandy Critical Defense.

There is another ammo out that is Military and Police only or was. I was able to buy some and it is pricey. It is called RBCD ammo. It is made by Federal premium. However it uses metal pieces and crushed together to form a bullet. The normal 45 bullet is 65 grains up to 90 grains. It travels at 1900 fps to 2100 fps. The ballistics are incredible. It was created by the same guy who made Black Talons, Hydra shoks and hi end stuff like that.
    Go to RBCD Performance Plus
They have info about their product.
The youtube has stuff with people using the ammo and with outstanding results.
    Good luck

Yes, it is, indeed, very expensive. Unfortunately, it fails--by a large margin--in penetration. It is one of a family of lightweight, high velocity, fragmenting/frangible offerings that make shallow, but gruesome, wounds without reaching vital organs.
