Feds say accused Owensboro, Ky., bomb maker was preparing for end of world:
OWENSBORO, Ky. — A federal grand jury has indicted an Owensboro man who reportedly was making pipe bombs to protect his family after watching a movie suggesting that the world will end in 2012.
Byron Birkhead, 50, was indicated on charges of illegally possessing a firearm or destructive device, comprised of pipe bomb components and chemicals, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.
On March 26, police and federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents responded to a complaint that Birkhead was making bombs at his home.
“When ATF agents interviewed Birkhead, he indicated that he had watched the movie ‘2012’ and was preparing to protect his family because the Mayan calendar proclaims that the world will end in 2012,” according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office news release.
If convicted, Birkhead faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a $10,000 fine and supervised release for a period of up to three years. He is to be arraigned on May 27
