I'm going to be getting my carry permit in a little more than a month, and I've been looking at both the FN FNP 45 Tactical, and the XDm 4.5" 45.

From what I can find, the FNP is going to run me ~$1000, which is on the edge of my price range.

Any suggestions or things to consider with either? Thanks

    It's not a permit ;)

Honestly, shoot whatever you can before being set on one pistol. Just because a gun looks and feels great, you may not be able to get follow up shots on target fast due to muzzle flip/recoil/etc.

If it were me, I'd find someone with each and shoot them both first.

Have you found a shop that has either, or better yet, both in stock so you can handle them? First rule of picking a carry gun is making sure it's comfortable in your hand.

I've never fired anything but the FiveseveN from FN, but if the FNP's are anything like it, they are nice. I've shot a first gen XD40sc before and it was fairly nice as well. I don't think you can go wrong on either choice. Again, I suggest handling them first.

Both of those may be on the large side for carry (IMO), They are also very different platforms as one is SA/DA hammer vs DA striker fire. For carry I would look for something smaller like the new slim line of the XDM's.

Sadly I don't know anyone who owns either of them, all of my buddies carry 1911s :n00b:.

The XDm felt great to my hands, but as stated above, I'd really like to shoot it first. I've only recently discovered the FN and it's just an idea.

I've also considered that, as I said, a few of my friends carry 1911s, how would they compare in size/weight to the 1911? I'm pretty open to anything besides something I can't get my full hand on

the 1911 will be the thinnest, shortest height and longest overall length
the fnp 45 will be the shortest overall length and tallest height
I didn't see the widths for the XDm or 1911, but the width for the FN is 1.58
that puts the XDm in the middle on OAL and height
