I'd like to think I would do something similar, but having never been in anything remotely close to that I can't say that I would for sure.
That guy is a real hero.

He's lucky to be alive. What he did a lot of courage and maybe a lot of adrenalin mixed as well. Agree or disagree with what he did, those folks probably owe him their lives.

Brave, not stupid. He saw the problem, assessed the situation, formulated a plan and acted on those plans. He made a conscious decision to put his life at risk to save four strangers. I'm amazed the bad guys didnt hear the brass cojones clanking together as he ran up the steps. All joking aside he should absolutely be recommended for a citizens medal.
