I've used google as a search engine only for a long time. Last couple of days has been a nightmare using it. I get a bunch of garbage now and find no way away from changing which i assume is the so called A I bs. Instead of getting lots of search results, i get about 1/3 results because Google insists on adding in web addresses, videos playing, extra descriptions of "see more like this" and each result is 4 times bigger than what the result size was before. Almost feel like when we used windiwsXP and then the nightmare setup of Vista operating system. A I is not new but they sure are convincing people it is..

#3 I'll try for awhile. Looks about what google used to be without all the extra crap. Set it to default and find settings are straightforward instead of confusion and aggravation trying to do something. Time will tell. Guess thats why i have used Firefox browser since it came out.

Vista and 8 were horrid. 10 has been okay if you hold your nose just right and I'll only go to 11 on my work laptop as I run strictly linux at home. Opting out of ever using MS again at home and am losing no sleep over it.

Oh and yes, DDG is great for search. Google has been :poop: for a while.

Haven't been forced to win11 yet. I have a 14yr old dell 1537 studio laptop put a 1 terabyte ssd in cause the old hd craped out and then most websites wouldn't work with vista, such as friggin turbotax. Upgraded frim Vista to 7 then the jump straight to win10. Upgrades all free. I have heard mixed reviews about upgrading to 11.

Just upgraded to Win 11 on my work laptop yesterday. Work had to push out a patched version to me as the standard install bombed twice for me. Finally have it working and I'm not impressed. Read yesterday that they'll start pushing ads soon. Screw that. We have enough ads we have to deal with I don't need it in my OS. I've been using Linux for years at home and love it. Way better than anything MS will ever release and more control for the end user.

I just got a new laptop and it came with 11. And yes it does push ads. Ads from Xbox and Lenovo (built in to the system). I uninstalled the Xbox crap and did away with those, and I've managed to block the Lenovo notifications now.

All that crap was a big big turn off for me in 10. I uninstalled what i could and turned off/disabled everything else. Tiles were terrible just like the junk phones ms had 10 or so years ago. I sure as heck wasn't signing up for an ms account. I use Firefox on all my stuff and google Gmail. From my understanding, people can get free upgrades, that's the only reason i still use my old laptop at times instead of buying a new 1 full of useless junk software.

I didn't have the issues with 10. I mean, I would get useless "notifications" but they weren't as aggressive as 11's. I used to use Firefox until I found out about Brave. I like it much better. Don't get nearly the amount of ads and cookies that I got with Firefox. I have a gmail account but never use it. I just use the yahoo account I've had forever.

Omg, yahoo.....i couldn't stand it anymore with all the spam, scams and porn spam. I'd get 50 plus on a daily basis then found out about Gmail years back. Few years later i started getting spam and other stuff which gmail luckily added the spam filter in. Don't notice what you refer to as getting ads in Firefox. I'll do some research about brave

I may be misremembering about the ads in Firefox. Don't get me wrong. It was MUCH better than Internet Explorer or Edge or Chrome, IMO. I just like that Brave blocks tracking cookies among other things. I do get some spam with yahoo, but usually less than 5 a day and they go straight to my spam folder, so that's not a big deal for me.

I had a vista box and it ran perfectly fine, never had an issue with it. Then like you I decided to make the switch to Linux on my main box. So I switched and had my daily driver running Debian and a crashbox also running Debian and had a raspberry pi as well. Did that for a few years but wanted to get back to gaming to I built a box and put win10 pro on it. If I could play all the games I want in a Linux world I would be running all Linux machines at home now.

I rarely game and when I do I verify the game runs on Linux through Steam and so far that's worked out. I'm very disillusioned with most games right now so it's not a priority for me. Just waiting on the next Elder Scrolls to come out and hoping they don't woke it up so that it's worthless.

Windows XP and 7 were the best. 10 was decent and very reminiscent of 7, however I have to dock points for the amount of bloatware Microsoft originally shipped with the OS. Then there's 11. Microsoft trying so hard to look like Apple. Have it on my work computer, and man there were decisions made that were so dumb. However, 11 is much better for anyone running a Intel CPU that uses the Performance and Efficient Core design, as it has a better controller than previous OS's.

I liked being able to get to properties for a file with two clicks. In 11, right click brings up this stupid simplified menu, which you then have to click "show more options" to get the windows 7,10 properties panel where you can then find the properties. Yeah it's only an extra click, however that adds up over time, and now you wasted a bunch of time doing an extra click because some moron corpo engineer tried fixing something that wasn't broken.

On the next computer I build, I'm going to go with the Penguin. I just don't know what flavor I want. Should see an increase in privacy and performance, as Windows sucks at hardware optimization compared to other OS's. Maybe then I can get pie menus, which IMO are far superior to the GUI that most OS's use.

A I is not new but they sure are convincing people it is..
AI is the new corpo buzzword for the day. A lot of executives that don't know crap about computer hardware somehow think that injecting it into everything will make it better. It's as if they say "AI" more than any other executive, then they'll somehow make more sales.

Paradoxically, the more "convenient" they make things, the more inconvenient and unoptimized the process becomes. Computers, specifically AI, are extremely complex systems that break down all the time. These systems are dumber and not as reliant as some people make them out to be. A freaking rogue ion from the sun making it past our magneto sphere can crash an entire network in a Bit Flip glitch (even though it's rare, it happens. Background radiation caused an MP in Belgium to get 4096 extra votes during an election because a rogue ion changed a bit in the tabulation system). So let's have these things run society. I see no problem here. Yeah, you'll make society more efficient, but at the cost of resilience and quality of life. And Lord forbid a major Carrington Event happens any time soon.

Not that the Terminator movies are remotely likely, but I always felt it would be some mad scientist with crazy hair and a lab coat or a Dr. Evil type individual that would unleash killer robots onto the world. No. It will be dumba** executives making cheesy jokes on stage at Computex that will unleash this stuff.
