My family was up at Mrs. Bigtankers mom and dads today. Grandpa brought out 2 small 22's and said that he thinks the kids might be big enough for these. The rifles are Anschutz Woodchuckers. One in 22lr and the other in 22 mag. He says they have never been shot.

I gave the 22lr to my boy, who is 5, to see how it fit him. Still a bit big but with me helping him, I'm sure he will be ok. It was raining out pretty good and we didn't feel like getting wet. I'm going to take them home, give them a good cleaning and we'll head back there in a few weeks.

    Now for some pics.

Here it is by my 4" XDs for a size comparison

And my boy holding the rifle.

I don't know much about these rifles. They look like it might have an adjustable trigger. Any info on these Woodchuckers would be helpful.

    What a LUCKY little boy..

My understanding about these rifles is,
The story I got was that Anschutz made a run of their standard, full-size 22 sporter, but there was something wrong with the muzzle. Instead of scrapping all the guns, they lopped the barrel to 16 1/2 inches and cut two inches off the butt, making it "kid-sized". Since the "Chipmunk" was new at the time, they called this new gun the Woodchuck, and for some stranger reason added "er" to Woodchuck.

    That's some good info. Thanks.

Pops really did your son well, I bought my kids first rifle ( a Deluxe Chipmonk ) in 1999 for 159.00 + tax, I looks at 2 Woodchuckers at that time and they were at least twice what I spent..
Very nice rifle, get that kid shooting Bullseye.. He has the right rifle to start with..

Only downside is that you started him off with an Anschutz, you think he'll ever settle for anything less from now on? Lucky kids! :yesway:

Nothing wrong with demanding quality! At least no one will have to worry about him dragging some damned HiPoint home one of these days!

    Really?????

Have you had kids? You can point them in the right direction. I can start them out right and try to teach them but at some point and time they will always drag home a HiPoint! May not be the exact gun but I feel HiPoint is a great metaphor for lots of poor decisions in life. "Man did you see Billys new girlfriend? She is a real HiPoint." Cheap entertainment that is good for a pop from time to time but deep down you know they will marry a 1911.

Save that photo of your son BigTanker. Some day, he'll cherish that photo and all of the memories you and he will build in the coming years with that rifle, knowing that this photo captured the start of it all. That's a photo that's worth getting a good print of so it does not get lost if a computer hard drive fails or something.

I do have one of me and my first BB gun. I'll have to see if I can find it.

Thanks for sharing. Awesome grandpa big tanker. I'm starting my own granddaughter out on a red Ryder this spring. Your boy is lucky to have someone pass down a firearm. Have fun. I have some Aguilla super collibri that would be fun to shoot in that if you are interested. Blessings Tim

im 39 now but got my first rifle when i was 7, a woodchuck just like the one you have. have shot it for many years. my daughter turned 7 a couple of years ago and i handed it on to her. she always wants to go shoot when we go out to her papa's house which makes me damn proud. i had also heard the story of them cutting them down because of something being wrong with the full size. accurate as can be and really fun to shoot. your grandson will love it and make special memories with you.
