My Grandson has a 410, a red ryder, and has shot a couple of my rimfires. I got him his first rifle. It's a Crickett 22 and I'm impressed so far. They come with a nice peep sight from the factory. It will need some fine tuning but he was hitting 2" targets out of the box. He wants it scoped so I get to play with it. It's a nice little rifle for a hundred bucks. I'm taking him squirrel hunting this week, I was planning on him using his 410 but he wants to use the 22. He's a good shooter and I'm pretty excited about taking him squirrel hunting.(we'll still take the 410)

I've hunted squirrel with a .22 for more than 40 years.
I always seem to blow critters to pieces with a shotgun.

I'd make sure he is real good with iron sights before putting a scope on it.

I totally agree. He's a good shot and is picking up on the factory peep pretty fast. I'll probably wait until his birthday in June to put a scope on it. I set him up on the bench with my Marlin .17 last summer. It was his first time using a scope. The length of the stock was a little awkward for him but he was grouping well in just a couple of shots from 25 yards. I can't get enough of taking him shooting:):

Might be good to get him in the habit of wearing eye/ear protection whenever shooting?
He does. Took his glasses off to figure out how to look through the scope. For the record he also wears a life jacket when fishing or swimming in the pond, and wears a helmet/goggles when driving his razr.

    Good stuff ! :)
My kid had a Chipmunk back in the 90's.......
That little rifle shot VERY well with Stingers.
I took it chucking and popped two 12# chucks at 50 yards each, right in the neck......neither made it down the hole (they were standing right by the dens).
    Stupid happy I was.

Those kids rifles are just too cool.
