anyone know what this thing is?
On the left side of the barrel its says 32 W.C.F. CTG

on the right side it says

SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A
    PAT'D MARCH.27.94.MAY.21.95.AUG.4.98.DEC
    22.98.OCT. 8.01.DEC17.01.FEB.6.06.SEP.14.09

or I think thats the numbers its hard to see

a 32 shell fits in but is loose and isn't big enough to get kicked out by the shell kicker outter thingy

Thanks! and I don't know, one of my gun range instructors tried it then recommended getting a .38 s&w ?

nobody i have ever shown it to has any idea what to shoot with it

You won't find ammo for it at a big box store, that's for sure - I had a revolver like that and had to hunt, even at gun shops, for ammo for it. I ended up trading it off to someone who liked the history of it that would probably never even shoot it.

You should try a .32 WCF, Just a sugestion though, since that is what it says on the barrel.

Did the round they tried in it have a rim?

As stated above... S&W Hand Ejector in 32-20...with a bad nickel job over old pitting! I had one, mfg. date was 1914...decent pistol, I reloaded for the 32-20 for awhile. These guns eventually morphed into the Model 10.
