What is it about gun shop owners and their employees that makes them entirely unsuited for any sort of customer service activities?

All I want to do is buy a simple Smith & Wesson M&P .40 cal normal pistol. This should be the easiest thing in Indiana to pull off. Here is my experience:

BudsGunShop online will sell it to me for $459, but it has to be tran

Don's Guns on the west side will sell it to me for $699. (Cause ol'Don doesn't wanna make any money he just wants to overcharge people for guns.) Their customer service guy got upset with me because I thought the price was a little high.

Indy Trading Post is so nice over the phone. They won't accept my FFL transfer from BudsGunShop, but they'll sell me the gun for $499. It's not in stock so they have to order it. I've left my name and phone number with the same clerk 3 times. He gets the price right each time and he takes my name and phone number each time, but the manager that he says will call me back never does.

PopGuns had some kind of issue going on when I entered the store. The gentleman in front of me somehow irritated the store clerks by filling out incorrect information on his background check form. They sold him the gun anyway but the clerk was really acting upset. Their price was a reasonable $539, but at 7 PM sharp, they shut down their computers and escorted me to the door. The clerk wasted 20 min of my time waiting for him to deal with his previous customer and then another 10 minutes trying to explain to me that the only defensive weapon on the planet is a shotgun.

Indy Gun Safety says on their website that they'll do the transfer from BudsGunShop for $35. They won't return phone calls or emails and their shop is only open for 4 hours on Sundays (allegedly). I've tried multiple times to contact them. They're just not interested.

Any thoughts? At this point, I'm looking for a reliable gun shop in town. Everyone is disqualified until proven otherwise.

I did my Buds transfer to Beech Grove Firearms. They are already on Buds preapproved list so there's no arranging you have to do short of calling them and letting them know it's coming. Buds was so fast last time I ordered that the pistol almost beat me there before I could notify them.

Pretty suprising about a couple of local shops that have received lots of rave reviews on this forum (IGS and Indy Trading Post). Sounds like you're in Indy so if you're really through with those three, try Richard over @ Richard's guns. He's done a couple of transfers for me and he's a good man to deal with. His very good about returning emails and PM's - you can get him on this forum.....userid michiana. Good luck!

    Try Bradis.

    Try The Outdoorsman.

    Try Plainfield Shooters Supply.

    Try Beech Grove Firearms.

    Try Wanamaker Guns.

And, as an last resort, try Elmore's.

Yeah, they are just ALL a bunch of sour puss curmudgeons that live to make life miserable for the rest of us! Gun store employees suck.

Seriously - what's so hard about walking into a shop that has one in stock and buying it? I can think of three in town that should have that model in their regular stocked inventory - all at very competitive prices.

    M&P .40 full-size in-stock at $509.95, or we will do a transfer from Bud's for $35.00.

    Was that so hard? ;)

Looks like a winner, buy from the local, stocking dealer when possible, ie, when the price difference is so minimal as to be meaningless . A few bucks is money well spent if you ever need service after the sale.

    Welcome from Mitchell, BTW.

It's not just gun shops...many small businesses are run by folks that are seemingly in the wrong line of work:D

I know you're in Indy, but there are a couple folks down here I've had good luck with. If interested, let me know.

Can't figure out what side of town you're on, but Indiana Gun Club shows they have a few in stock on their website. Their shop / shotgun range is near 116th and Olio Rd in Fishers.

Indiana Gun Club :: Inventory :: Guns For Sale

Pick Smith and Wesson as the brand and then 40 as the caliber. That range kit should come with an extra magazine, holster, Maglula loader, and maybe a mag carrier. I haven't called to see if their web inventory is accurate.
