Today I met a hamburger hill vet who was also in the area of the we were soilders battle, said both movies are pretty accurate, he was a paratrooper and hamburger hill was his second trip to Vietnam and that was when he took a few rounds. Said it was really bad on that hill and that they were seriously considering fragging or killing the CO because he was making never ending decisions that were getting people killed. Said he stayed in the army and retired with 30 years in and was stationed for a while at FT. Ben. Can't remember the name but said the book on the guy that mell Gibson played is pretty good and accurate

My neighbor is a Vietnam vet. Not to many pleasant stories come from him. He was also a POW MIA, purple heart, silver start and either a couple of gold or bronze star recipient.

He mentioned the movies and to watch them if I wanted to see a glimpse of what they going through.

The guy Mel Gibson played was Hal Moore. Hal Moore and Joe Galloway wrote the book "We Were Soldiers - Once And Young", the book the movie was based on. Most events in the movie are accurate but if you read the book, the final battle where US troops and gunships annihilate the NVA never took place. In fact, more US troops were brought in to secure the LZ and then those troops walked to a new LZ to be extracted. The NVA ambushed these guys and killed more US troops on their way out than were killed in the initial battle.

The NVA did to the Air Cav at LZs X-Ray and Albany, like they did to the French troops in the opening of the movie. No disrespect to the Army or Air Cav, just stating the facts that Hal Moore put in his book.
