The History Channel did a show investigating whether Fort Knox has any gold left in it at all. No civilian has been allowed to view the gold reserve for 37 years. No audits have been allowed. People think that it has all been covertly sold off already, and the only function of the Fort is to protect the "idea" that the United States has a gold reserve.

There were some pretty interesting interviews held throughout.

Michael Rivero discusses the history of Fort Knox as well as the counterfeit bars that were discovered in Europe, marked identical to Fort Knox bars. Tungsten bars dipped in a thin layer of gold are being passed off as the real thing.

Not enough Gold left in the world to back our currency so I doubt it is still there. The big question would be "Who has it now?"

I also read the report a few years back about counterfeit bars being discovered in Europe and if I remember correctly Asia as well. Germany and China I believe. These were said to be bars that were marked and came from Ft. Knox. Tungsten is the metal that weighs closest to gold. Drilling the bars was the only way this fraud was discovered. Strange thing is I never heard any more after the original accusatory story.

At this point it's all speculation. As long as it hasn't been proven that there isn't any gold there then it's still there and it's business as usual. Unless longbow can pull his plan off and provide deffinative proof to the contrary.
