Every so often you run across a gem like this on the internet and it's easy to think even for the briefest time that perhaps, just a little, that the internet might have some relevancy after all.

After WWII ended, one Japanese soldier refused to surrender for 3 decades

I had heard this story many moons ago, perhaps when it was first published but it's still interesting.

That took a lot longer than I expected.

Not to take away from the sentiment but it reminds me of the twilight zone story I think it was, where if the guy fell asleep the war became a reality wherever he was. People in a diner thought he was crazy so they bashed him on the head knocking him out cold. That's when a search and destroy patrol materialized and vaporized the diner IIRC.

Great article. There have been a lot more than just this one, and the most recent 2 didn't give up until the 90's.
