I just bought my first 1911 a Kimber Grand Raptor. Now I need a holster for it. I open carry so conceal ability is not a requirement. What is everyone using to tote their pretty carry pieces?

I like the DeSantis Cocked & Locked. It's a nice OWB leather holster, that has a thumb break. You can carry your 1911 with the hammer back/safety on, and the thumb break engaged. Use a bit of the Galco holster lube/conditioner, and it's a super smooth draw.

I don't know about you, but for open carry, I prefer some method of retention. I've typically bought Galco holsters (and I have an open top for my 1911), but the Galco offering with a thumb break requires the hammer to be down.

I carry my 1911 cocked and locked in a Galco with the thumb break in place.

Do the same thing with my Browning HP.

Whatever holster you get, make sure it provides for cocked and lock...

Thanks for the links, just got a 1911 and will have one of these soon.

I really love a paddle holster and have a custom one that I had made many years ago. It's nice and easy to just slip on and you don't need a belt (if you wear tight pants) but has an open top with no retention. I'll definitely be buying the DeSantis cocked and locked. Along with guns, you can never have too many holsters.

I would not recommend a thumbreak on a 1911 style pistola. It is not needed if you properly care for and safety check the thing. Its also one more thing to have to keep away from the trigger when reholstering.

I love blackhawk holsters for the pure reason someone cant come up behind me and steal my gun. and another +1 for comfortability. I like tagua and stoner for leather holsters

I also carry my Colt in a Garrett industries Silent thunder.

Glad I got it...was worried Id hate the kydex but I really like it.

For leather Id go with Mernickle, milt sparks(if you wanna wait), or kirkpatrick.

    All under $100.

    God bless

thank you guys for all the feedback! although I think my decision just got harder... I had a blackhawk holster for a kahr cw45 that i carried but not too crazy about shoving my Kimber in that hard plastic case. The kydex wrapped in leather is a neat idea I'm just not sure thats the way I want to go. Probably going to stick with leather.

What are other peoples opinion on the thumb break/strap? YES or NO?
