A friend and I were discussing how ammo prices have impacted our range trips. I have a good supply, but know I can’t really replenish it as well these days. If I had tens of thousands of rounds, I’d still be making some kind of dent. Even reloaders aren’t immune since components still need to be replaced. History tells us supply will catch up, but the pandemic throws a wrench into those historical cycles. In short, who knows when it’ll get better.

How has this changed the hobby for you?

I've never thought of such matters as a hobby.

If only sticks and stones, one can still practice one's best defense.

At the risk of derailing my original question...

Do you think politicians have caused this? To me it seems more like manufacturing slowdowns on components due to the pandemic, mixed with an extreme case of panic due to political events. People have been coming out of the woodwork to sell ammo for more than double what they paid, and flippers are at retailers every morning. The shooting community has once again proven to be their own worst enemy, IMO. Capitalism, sure, but cannibalism as well.

The insatiable state is driving this.

My apologies for taking the thread off track.

    Back to the topic.

No. There has been no change in my hobbies.

I've definitely slowed down. Even reloading like you said isn't immune. I tried to stock up on powders and primers as much as possible but still those diminish.

With any luck it'll catch back up and we'll be able to get back to sort of "normal".

The good thing is, is once you have created your muscle memory and other things such as breathing etc.. it takes very little practice to keep the edge on the knife. Kind of analogous to a knife edge.. if you touch it up now and then before it gets dull, it doesn't take much to keep it razor sharp.

I have to admit it but I just don't feel like I can afford to shoot. I am well stocked up on most all calibers and should go ahead and shoot to my heart's content but I can't get past thinking, almost a dollar a pop... 50 rounds, $50... do you think you can **** through your money like that?

Have scaled back but that's due to personal/family factors instead of external/ammo factors. Looking forward to the spring thaw and more outdoor range time.

As a first-time firearm owner for a little over a month, I've been going out to the range at least once a week. I intend on keeping it that way, so long as I can afford a box or two of ammo each time. I've so much to learn, so much more practice to get under my belt, I don't want to let any of that to languish. Now is the time to get the foundation right. I don't have the luxury of the rest of you that came out of the womb guns akimbo! ;)

My shooting has dropped off a lot sadly.
Been considering one of those laser trainer deals to try and keep the skills sharp.

    This.
I dug the old Savage out of the back of the safe and am seriously looking at taking up NRL22.
When 22 comes back in stock on CCI's website or in certain brick-and-mortar stores I'm still able to replenish my stash affordably these days. And I'm having a lot of fun shooting 22s! My 22's didn't get enough love before, now they're my go-to's.

Way less range time and way more rimfire when I do.
I have a 110% replacement policy on any ammo I use. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to take disciplinary action on myself for breaking my own policy.

I've cut way down on my range time. I went once in the last few months and it was BANG there's a dollar, BANG there's a dollar, BANG that's a dollar... BANG that makes $250 I just spent... damn!

So I'm going a lot less. I'm doing dry fire practice at home instead.
