This has been an interesting couple of weeks to say the least. I need some advice on the matter of moving back to Chicago. Yea i know bye bye guns and any type of simple freedom. I was offered a job in chicago that requires residency in the city limits. The job part was a no brainer, I accepted it. The other side is what do I do with my guns? Can I keep them in a storage locker and whenever I feel like going to the range, just go? My parents reside in munster and I am currently living in whiting, Can I keep them there and still be able to go to a gun range legally? The other thing is if im not carrying anymore, I really don't see the need for all the carry guns I have impulsively bought over the last couple of months. My new focus is hand to hand and knife training. What do I do?

Could you ask your current employer to match the offer? Also remember that while you may be getting more salary, Chicago's cost of living is very high.

I would look into leaving them with my parents, and hope they had private land with which to shoot them on. I would look into self defense training as a matter of course anyhow.

I wouldn't sell my guns in hopes I get offered a better job in a good state.

Tough choice. Live in a Sh--hole and have no God given rights for a paycheck. Or live in a free state with a smaller( or no) paycheck. I dont remember if you can get a non res LTC or permit from anywhere if you live in IL

Wow. Securely leave them with the parents and don't make any more
impulse decisions. The job may not pan out at you will be back.
Not being a storm crow but see how it works out and make the decision
after you have slept once or twice upon it.
Query: The job "requires" you to live within city limits or they said it would be nice for you to live in the city limits?

I would have some firearm securely stored somewhere even if it and I were separated. At least one. Period.

Even if the pay is equal... Living in downtown Chicago, you don't need a car. Subtract the car-associated costs, and you might come out ahead.

I don't have any advice, though.

Might want to consider gifting them to your father...with the stipulation that you can use them whenever you want to come back to Indiana.

And get your Utah non-resident firearms license, so when you DO come to Indiana again, you can carry.

well given this some thought and I am going to keep one handgun and rifle in a storage locker for a SHTF scenario , get my utah non-resident and sell the rest off. Look for a classified post within the next couple of days. Thanks Indyguy77 and techres for the advice.

I would gladly "hold" your guns for you. I will take good care of them and "feed" them as often as possible.:D

Don't sell them... you'll be sorry later. Leave them in the security of family, and get them when you are liberated.

Look up Illinois law for sure.
I think you need a Firearm Owners ID card to even keep a gun in Illinois.
    Talk about socialism!

No i was going to keep them in indiana, don't want to deal with registering my already lawful guns.

I will echo others. That just plain sucks! I have visited chicago several times (before I carried) and I loved the city. If you are going to be in a related field maybe you could ask your current employer to match or at least counter the offer? I mean if you are going to be quitting anyways, who cares if they know you got another offer? Definitely look into that firearm owners ID card I have heard about. The Utah permit is going to be a good choice regardless of where you live. It is recognized in more places than our LTCH. Others have said to get your IN LTCH but as I understand it if you change your address to out of state the LTCH is no longer valid? It's a shame you'll be moving to occupied territory, but I'll be looking for the quality classified ad.

If that storage locker is going to be in IL, you better suck it up and get the ID card. I think each of us knows that an overzealous DA is going to throw the book at you with any firearms infraction you incur, and Chicago is full of them. I don't recommend being without defensive arms in the home, but get ready to have the freakin book thrown at you if you don't do it right in IL.

After reading (and watching) the post called "beating death" there is NO WAY I would be in that city without some sort of protection. Go through any red tape you need to, but have something to protect yourself in that lawless city.

No, the storage locker is going to be in nw indiana close enough to chicago, when my utah non res permit comes in I can carry when I visit my parents.

Sounds like a good plan to me. These guys are a lot of help! Good luck with your new job. Hegewisch is still a pretty safe neighborhood and not far from Munster at all, there's a lot of cops and firemen there, I used to live there years ago and my folks did up until very recently.

Yeah, I would go with a Storage locker in Indiana. Make sure to get it and get your handguns there before your Indiana LTCH expires.

Could You at least have a long gun with you tho?

What happens if you move out of state and you have a lifetime LTCH? Would it be invalid if you came back?

I may be faced with a similar scenario as above and have given this a lot of thought myself. I'm from Western New York (opposite end of the state from the city -thank god!) and the wife has been REALLY talking about moving back by the family sometime in the near future. Now for Upstate New York, it isn't so bad and my long guns would be no problem (as long as thier not "assualt weapons" -:fawk:u NY) but I own a pile of handguns. It takes about 6-8 months and a lot of BS and you'll finally have a pistol permit, but you can't own (or really even touch) a handgun without it.

So, lucky for me, my dad and brother both have their permits. So I would have to pay tranfer fees on both ends and they could register them on their permits until the 6-8 months until I get mine.

Anyway, another option I thought of, and I'm not sure of Chicago's law's, but it sounds like they are the same as NYC where you basically can't own anything unless you are one of the few to get a permit, was to trade them all for long guns before I went and trade back after I had my permit. But it sounds like that wouldn't be an option in chicago. That and I have some cool stuff it took me awhile to find and would hate to give up.

So, Indiana, it really is great out here! It can suck really bad elsewhere. And here we thought we were in a country that believed in equality? Talk about discrimination at it's finest!
