Hey guys. I have aquired this M1 carbine and was wondering what people could tell me about it. It is a winchester and as far as I can tell numbers matching. The stock is pretty rough but on the sling (which appears to have been on it since the dawn of time) has korean lettering on it. It will cycle and dry fire just fine as well so it is in (from what I can tell) perfect working order. I have taken the best pictures I can for now. Also, what is the value on something like this? Since I cannot find 30 carbine ammo anywhere I may sell it to fund my AR and garand. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Looks like a Korean import to me. We gave them large numbers of M1 Garands and Carbines and then they sold them back to us. There should be an import mark under the barrel, some are pretty small but you can see or feel it. Stocks can be found, as well as most other parts if you look around.

This is what I have found. Words were not stamped very well it seems. Also has an N and a small print that looks like a W with a P or an I going through it in an oval on the top of the barrel.

Looks like an importer mark. The barrel should have the maker and production date and a flaming bomb on top right behind the front sight.

December 1944 or January 1945 would be my guess. As someone else said, the should be a date the barrel was made just behind the front sight. Now days. rack or field grade USGI carbines have been bringing $700 to $900. I'd think you are on the upper end of that depending on the condition of the bore. Maybe more if there are 'W's on all of the parts inside. Imagine where that rifle has been...Korea maybe? ...the Pacific before that? Nice piece of history. I wouldn't part with it!

Actually the N mark is behind the front sight. there is another mark a little farther back on the barrel as well but it's hard to see. Like I said in earlier post, looks like a w with an I or a p going through it. Seems kinda odd from what I've been seeing now,

It sounds like a Winchester barrel. It would just have a W with a P in it inside an oval.
Being an Import brings the value down somewhat. To me it's a $600 to $650 rifle being an import with a rough stock but that's just me. Winchester made the second most carbines , second only to Inland.

Yep, sounds like a Winchester barrel. Carbines can get tricky because so many parts were made by so many different manufacturers it's hard to keep track of them all. I'm usually happy if the gun is "mostly" correct because during war a lot of parts will get replaced or changed. Keep us posted on what you find out.

And Winchesters usually have a higher value than the others, if it is pure Winchester.

Value can be tough to determine. In my looking, the prices vary quite a bit for what is seems to be the same firearm. And some say if you refinish them, the value drops.

Nice shooter. I see alot of post WWII parts on it. That tells me post WWII arsenal re-build. Stock appears to be the "pot belly" M2 type. Again Korean war vintage. Sling is Korean, not USGI probably put on in the 50's by Korea. It appears to have a "flip' type safety? Again tell-tale post WWII re-build. Winchester did not date their barrels. Had a P going through a W stamped on it.Hard core carbine collectors refer to carbines like yours as a "mix master's" they call them that because they are made up of parts from all the different manufacturers. Often they (collectors) buy them for the Winchester or other rare makers parts that can be found inside of them. They became "mix masters" because after the war when being re-built the arsenal just tore millions of these rifles down and threw the parts into bins and then just grabbed a part when re-assembling them. That is how many were left then to this day.The differences in these rifles is mind staggering. Anyway, nice little shooter. Value...$600-$700 IF you find the right person. Anyway, enjoy and shoot it.:D

Buy up some 30 Carbine, the CMP is selling Lake City by the 1000 rd case now last I checked and its good stuff. They also have the Aguila by the box. You can re-finish that stock too, I did that to one and it was a neat project. Dont sand off any cartouche stamps
