I was just given an M38 that "has been in the closet for 5 or 10 years". When I got it home I looked down the barrel and the best way I can describe what I saw is that it looks fuzzy. You know, like a peach. Is this thing toast or can it be saved? If it can be saved, what is the best way to go about it? I have never seen a bore in this bad of shape.

    Start cleaning.

I bought an m91/59 with a black bore for about $135. I cleaned and cleaned and even made a battery powered bore cleaner. I never thought i got it cleaned well enough. I decided to sell i a year later and took it out of the safe and looked down the barrel and the lands were bright and shiny. the grooves were still dark, but it looked much better than I thought and decided to keep it.
