So not to beat a dead horse on gun laws, but why can I get a carry permit at 18 but can't purchase a handgun till 21? Backstory: so a while back I remember getting my gun permit, boy, I was excited so what next? To pick out a handgun. so after quite a while deciding what I wanted and locating it, I went with my father to purchase it. At the establishment which I dare not mention out of respect, (lets just say the name is sounded something lik duel ping) I handled the firearm and further decided its what I wanted but at the point of us purchasing it they brought up accusations of a "straw purchase" (basically buying a weapon for a criminal who couldn't otherwise get it on there own. Not the legal, licensed, adult voting citizen I am) and refused to sell it to us. Didn't realize it was illegal to gift something anyways. Your thoughts on a bit of an catch 22 law like that?

Perfectly legal to buy a handgun from a private seller at 18. It's also perfectly legal for a father to purchase a firearm from an FFL as a gift for his son.

Yep. Pick out a pistol and have your dad buy it for you as a gift. Or purchase the pistol from a private party.

Which is what I thought. As well as several other older gentlemen at other stores agreed with where it was later purchased. Just not at the one we drove an hour and a half away for because I wanted "the big .40"

It's a legal sale IF your dad was buying the gun with HIS money and GIFTing it to you. If he used your money then yes, it's a straw sale and illegal. Straw doesn't mean you're a criminal. Though a straw sale can turn you into one. I'm glad you got your gun though!

I went thru the same as I am currently 20. For my situation all it took was showing the establishment previous guardianship papers. Saddest part is you are legal to carry but at certain ranges not allowed to shoot. It's messed up logic that you can carry a handgun at 18 with a license but not train at a shooting range to learn proper use..

He said he did NOT get what he was looking at the first time.
Nice looking piece O.P. Is that a CZ, or a clone thereof?

Because of: Federalism in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Think of two parallel railroad tracks, one is labelled federal, one is labelled Indiana.

Federal: have to be 21 to buy a handgun from one of our FFLs.

Indiana: well, we don't regulate FFLs, but you have to be 18 to buy a handgun from a non-FFL which we can regulate.

    **************

Federal: we have no laws for licensing regime for handgun carry

Indiana: Well, we do have such a licensing regime and you have to be 18

^what he said. I ended up getting the 9 because the second store we went to didn't carry the .40 and because everything in the house is mostly 9mm so its a little easier to swap ammo. And its a clone, its a Witness P made by Tanfoglio imported by EAA. I Love it. It shoots like a dream and it fits my hand perfectly. It just points.

I thought I recognized that profile.
    I have 2 Tanfoglio's.
First is an EAA Witness, steel frame, full size .45acp with the "Wonder Finish".
The second is a TA-90 Tanfoglio 9mm, again in steel and full size.

I just love those guns. They feel like they were built for my hand.

    Congratulations on a nice piece.
