How well does it hold up? Will a trace of oil (as a result of normal gun cleaning) have any effect on it? Is it reasonably resistant to chips and scratches?
Same thoughts I was having on painting a set of handguards for an AR build I have in the works. Same questions from me as well. I originally planned to paint them with the Krylon and then do an overspray with clear spraypaint to help protect the original coating from wear and tear.
Long story is NO. It will look good and last for a while, but any coating you put over plastic will overtime separate. It could look good for quite a long time, BUT, its durability is directly related to how you treat it. Krylon regardless of the type being formulated for plastic is still just spray paint and will wear accordingly.
I used Brownells Aluma Hyde on my Glock 30 frame and it has held up perfectly. Even the strongest cleaners don't bother it. I tried the Krylon route first and it was a very big mistake.

What I'm going to paint is plastic grips. I want a dark brown color and what Aluma-Hyde advertises as "Earth Brown" is what I'd call olive drab. Even the cap on the can indicated that it would be a dark brown, but it sure wasn't.
