The local National Guard Unit in Evansville, 1-163 FA, sponsored a Memorial Day celebration. This event included a 5K road race, inflatable jumping mazes for the kids, a display of common military rifles (SAW, M60, M16A2, etc.), vehicle displays and free hotdogs/hamburgers. The prizes for the 5K were used (polished) artillery shells and handmade plaques. Those prizes are unique, in my experience. Unlike most 5k's, this one started on time, perhaps because the military was in charge of it. I was in the Guard in another state many years ago, and this event brought back some memories. I have no connection to this unit - I just thought it was very well done, and I believe they deserve recognition, both for their service generally and for a quality event.
