Probably. I'd use a Hi-Roc straight flute in the diameter you want. Or, you might use a carbide, two fluted, center cutting end mill run in a Bridgeport Mill. One thing you are definitely NOT going to do is; hold it by hand and drill it with a hand drill.....

The D2 is 58-60Rc. A mount it tightly in a vise and ensure it's level and get a few carbide bits and drill. De-lamination of the scales due to the heat that will be generated will most likely occur.

I however do not advise you proceed with attempting to drill that hole.

Wanna make me one with a lanyard hole in it? Maybe I can drill the scales on both sides of the d2, top to bottom, (front to back?) At the base and run the lanyard thru 2 holes. It needs a string.

Just spitballing here, but for knives that are already hardened, would it be viable to use a laser cutter to bore a hole, then grind, file, and sand to smooth it out?

How thick is is steel, what size hole, spot with a carbide ball end mill, run carbide drill about 400-500 rpm flood with coolant, if you had a CNC mill you can helical ball end mill thru in about 2 minutes.

How about end milling one scale through to the metal; then EDM through the metal and finish by end milling through the other scale????

Those would both work if you have the gear!
