scope not included in the price. that scope costs more than the gun.
    here is the price breakdown.
    trigger 100
    stock 450
    bottom metal 200
    mag 60
    gun 550
    scope base 100
    rings 100
    vortex pst 830

thats 2360 which leaves you some room to pay someone to have it either skimmed or pillar bedded.

Something like a Remmy700 or a Savage. My understanding is that these 2 are the ones with the most readily available aftermarket parts and pieces. And Savage seems to be the easiest to work on. Have I been told right or did my leg get yanked on?

I wasn't yanking your leg at BGF.

The chamberings chase the bullets, which is the end that matters. 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm, lead the pack for the best BC / velocity intersections out to 1k and a bit past.

I have a Remington action build in .308 that I have shot for a few years but this time I went with a Savage for that build it myself feel. A Stevens 200 action to start then barrel of your choice in caliber of your choice. Change the bolt face to match the brass and have fun adding all the goodies. Buy as you can afford or want to change stuff. Get tired of one caliber change it, takes about 10 minutes.
I built my first in .223 just for the sake of price. I ran nearly 200 rounds through it last weekend and had a blast it is shooting bug holes at 100 I will see how it holds together out to 500 later this week. In the mean time I am gathering parts for a 6.5 Creedmore build on the same action.
Geoff Korn built my Remington. It wasn't very fun. Pick out the parts, hand him a handful of cash wait for him to call, pick it up and go shoot. I have had a lot of fun buying parts and installing them myself on my Savage.
