I have been getting the ich to pick up a lever action. I am wanting something bigger than a 22LR but not sure what to go for. What was the most common ammo type before "the great hording of 2013"?

In a lever overall the most common caliber nation wide is the good old 30-30.

If the chinesse or russian's ever invade the USA the line in the sand most likely will be in the eastern applacian area. The government would be dropping 30-30 rounds to the fighters from planes. Between the marlin 336 and the winchester 94 there is one or two 30-30's in every truck and house in the area.

In indiana you most likely have the 44 mag as the most popular round after the 22 because of the weird deer rilfe laws.

I love the Henry Big Boy. I have the 44mag version. It's American made too. That is a plus for me. I really enjoy mine.

Nice, the 44mag sounds like a good starting place then if I really like them I might pick up a .30/30 as well.

I just parted with a Henry 22 mag. Nice little rifle, I still have a Henry 22 LR and it is a fine little plinking gun. The Brass Big Boy is in 45 LC and does it's job well also. Henry quality is well known.

I just sold my Winchester Wrangler 357 magnum lever gun. With it's short 16.25" barrel it was like a toy in my big hands...but it is a perfect Indiana deer gun !!

    I think everyone should own a 30/30 lever and a 30-06 bolt.

I will inherit one of the above one day... And can't afford to buy/feed the other. :(

I had the beginnings of a hare-brained idea the other day. For some reason unknown to me, I thought it would be pretty cool to have a .45-70 lever action stainless steel guide gun. I'm not even a guide!

Last weekend I had a similar feeling I needed a marlin .450 lever action. There's now one in my safe :)

I good lever action rifle is the True american look to say the least.

I guide gun is a great gun, So is the 336 30-30, and any of the good lever 22's. TO me they just feel better than any bolt action rifle made. But I am very baised to them since the very first gun I bought myself was a win 9422m XTR.

Still think she is sexy as she was in 1984.

I have a Rossi M92 in .45 Colt, could not be happier with it. With propper handloads, the .45 Colt round is the equal of the .44 Magnum. You just need to make sure that any such loads are restricted to firearms that can handle them; such as this rifle, the Ruger Blackhawk, Old Model Vaquero, and the like.

Here is a photo of my Rossi.

.22 MAG is a viable option, Henry and Marlin make 'em, as does Winchester.
.357 and .44 mag are the pre eminent deer loads in Indiana, as alluded to above.
.444 and .450 are a HOOT, but expensive to shoot, and tough to find.
.45 long colt is great, and as earlier stated, can be loaded hot.
Everyone has their favorites. I love Marlins.

I picked up the same rifle in .357 mag a few weeks back. It's a great cheap 100 yard plinker if you reload. So far it's digested .38 wad cutters and round nose flat points as well as a variety of .357 loads. Funnest rifle I've bought in a long time, virtually no recoil, low noise and makes a 2 liter pop bottle sail when hit.

If you own revolvers, pick one up, in the same caliber..... .357 or .44, or even .45 Colt...
