From what I can tell you only pick up Minnesota if you elect to get a UT permit instead of FL. There is a lot more to gain for the FL permit. I think I should get that one. Any thoughts?

The Utah its 65 bucks up front after you take the class. It's good for 5 years then a $10 renewal there after for every 5 years.

I did the Florida permit because Florida isn't specific about what kind of training class you have. I took an NRA class 5 years ago and it counted, or military/veteran status also counts I believe. Utah required you to take their specific class or a class that met their requirements. Florida does cost more, but it was easy and convenient to get without needing to find and take yet another class on how to aim a gun.

If you are comparing the two, you should look at renewal costs. I thought the UT was cheaper to renew, but I don't remember.

Discounting initial costs, renewal costs, years effective, ease of obtaining, etc., here is information I compiled, as of Januaryr, 2011, per handgunlaw.us:

Currently, there are 26 states that honor the Indiana Handgun Carry Permit:

AK, AL, AR, AZ, CO, FL, GA, IA, ID, KY, LA, MI, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NH, OK, PA, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, and WY.

With an out-of-state Florida permit, add the following eight states:
DE, KS, NE, NM, OH, VA, WA, WV. Note: KS and NM honor FL permits but not UT permits.

With an out-of-state Utah permit, add the following seven states:
DE, MN, NE, OH, VA, WA, WV. Note: MN honors UT permits but not FL permits.

So, if you visit Kansas or New Mexico, get the Florida permit.
If you visit Minnesota, get the Utah permit.
Either works in Ohio, or DE, NE, VA, WA, or WV.

Pays your money; takes your pick!

I have a Florida permit for the exact same reasons. I was in the same situation, having taken an NRA class a number of years before I applied.

There was a thread on here some time ago that had a link to a training class you could take online that was good for the Florida license. I've searched but can't find it. Anyone know where that may be?

Would a DNR huter safety course count?

I got the Florida because my DD214 served as proof of training.

Wow! I didn't know that. I was LEO in the Air Force and even then I didn't consider it counting as my class. I wonder, though, because I have been out for 18 years. I'll have to look into that. My life is so busy right now with grad school and work in the emergency department, that I don't have time for the class, but I want to be able to carry into Ohio to visit my daughter so I don't have to drive the country roads without protection.

So Utah and Florida, you can get a permit without being a resident of that state?
