I have never seen a nice winchester stock with matching upper wood at a 1500. Not saying you wont but its not likely. check the CMP forum and you may find a decent deal, it where i buy all my carbine parts. M1 Carbine - CMP Forums

I've been checking cmp and surplusrifle.com. I wont be able to make the 1500 this weekend so i'm going to try and find one in the meantime.

how do you know? any other info?

Well, it's complete speculation but.. The first number sequence appears to be a social security number. They are assigned by state and 640 is assigned to Texas. The second sequence of numbers I got wrong. I thought it was a phone number, 580 is the area code for the Oklahoma City area. But 7 digits would only be the local exchange and that could be anywhere.

Well if EJ Cambell isn't dead I'm sure he would appriciate it if you would edit out his social security number.
The crack does look fresh. You can get a decent GI stock for not too much if you keep an eye out. They turn up, there was several sets for $40 at knob creek a year or so ago.

Good luck with UPS or FedEx. They are going to tell you that guns are a prohibited item and deny your claim. That seems to be what happens when ever I see someone post about filing a claim.

engraving Social security numbers was a popular thing to do in the 60s and 70s I think.

I'm afraid FedEx will say the same thing. However, the seller insured the gun for full value at time of shipment and has agreed to make the claim, so I guess we will see what happens. Although, i'm not going to count on a big corporation like that to take care of their customers... even with pictures to prove it.

I once shipped a gun and the stock was cracked during shipping. Luckily the new owner's brother was an antique furniture restorer and was able to make the stock like new, so I didn't file a claim. If the break is new, there might be a chance that it can be repaired. There are some really good adhesives on the market and work well if someone with experience uses them.

    UPDATE ON FEDEX CLAIM!

The seller took it upon himself to file the fedex claim for the cracked stock. They sent me a check for $150 to purchase a USGI M1 Carbine stock! Since this thread started I have picked up a USGI Late WWII/ Early Korean Walnut stock for $90, M4 Bayonet w/ Scabbard for $65, and a 1943 Boyt Khaki OD Carbine Magazine Pouch in Excellent Condition for $35! Once everything is together I will make sure to get pictures up!

Sweet deal, OP. Glad it all worked out! I have an Inland M1 Carbine (10-1943). My dad paid $250 for it 23 years ago. It is in very good shape & spends most of its time in my safe. I take it out & put a few magazines of ammo through it each summer. A joy to shoot!
Due to sentimental value, I wil never sell it. It will be a family heirloom. Enjoy your rifle, sir!:D

Thank you! I hope to make it to either the North or South store before too long. My next purchase will be a Garand, but i'd really love to be able to go to the north store to pick it out. Only problem is they do not have any service grades in the store and i'm not willing to shell out 950 for a Service Grade Special.

That bayonet is pretty cool, where did you pick it up? I already have a mag pouch. (And an M-1 Carbine, of course. ;))

I found it on gunbroker. I offered him a price via email and he took it. I picked this one up for 65 shipped. I had also been following ebay bayonets for awhile but just happen to come across this deal first.

I managed last july to catch the very last batch of service grade M1's at the north store. There were 5 on the shelf. I nabbed a 1945 Springfield, After that, they would appear sporadically and random in very small quantity. The Carbines had been long for a few years. I still kick myself for missing that ship! Be patient. The CMP has a large quantity of m1 garands to grade, inspect, rebuild, etc. Alot are IHC's! So be ready! Stash the $$...dont tell the spouse the $ even exists! Im ready! This time I am going to pick up atleast 2 more garands and as many parts as i can get to build my own in .308. Dont forget the ammo! 30-06 surplus ammo was 200rds for $98 last July.

Nice carbine! Now I am gonna have to post a pic of my Springfield M1 Garand to "rub it in"!

I am really surprised that they paid anything. I was recently shipped a machinists tool box that was brand new. when I opened the box it looked like it was beaten on by a bat. to make a long story short after 3 boxes were shipped to me and back I kept the 4th one. It had damage but it was small enough that I could live with it. Shipping company claimed not enough packing material on a couple of the penetrating hits to the box I don't care how much protection it had there would have been damage.

I was quite surprised myself. It could have been that the seller felt bad and just sent me a personal check; however, he did tell me that FedEx sent him a claim check for $150, which is why he sent that amount. It's hard telling, but sorry to hear your experience wasn't as positive.

I definitely learned something though. After that happened the first time, I had the guy who I purchased the second stock from take good pictures of it before he sent it, in case the same thing occurred. Thankfully it showed up in perfect condition
