during disasters, FEMA says fill bottles and bath tubs and sinks, with water, well, there is another way to have water at home but it requires a
generator, and a De-humidifier, lately I have been able to produce 4.5 gallons of water in a 5 to 6 hour process if the De-humidifier is outside and the humidity is over 65%.
Inside where the humidity is around 50% if the power is off you will be around the 65% or greater, you will produce about the same amount.

This isn't a cure all but it is another option for those you want to be self
    suficient.

In the winter time it will take longer but at least you'll have water.

    Also check out SODIS

The SODIS process involves filling transparent plastic bottles with water and exposing them to full sunlight for six or more hours so that a combination of UV-A radiation and increased water temperature disinfects the water. This process may be combined with solar reflectors or solar cookers to further increase water temperature.
