So I keep seeing in the liberal media that gun control is facing an uphill battle in congress. I see it from NPR to Huffpo and beyond. I wonder if it is part of a strategy to lull us into complacency. If they portray that the battle is uphill for the administration, then does it make sense that less of use would be inclined to make our opinion known to our legislators thus giving them the advantage. What do you guys think?

It's to fire up their base. If you say "all is well" people assume it's all in hand and no more donations, work etc is needed. They may even lower their funding.

This is not a time for complacency or inaction on the part of gun owners. Keep sending letters to government representatives, recruiting members for the NRA and other pro 2A organizations and donate $ to the NRA-ILA if you can. The fight is far from over IMO.

We can never be complacent again. Not on 2A issues nor on any liberal issues. They have already spent us into a corner and ruined our country. It is not time to work with liberals, it is time to destroy and banish their ideology. If they protest, we protest double. If they want to make the biggest stink, then we will have a bigger laser show. Get active on social media and on the streets, and become your own community agitator.

They're reporting it because - wait for it - its the truth. It *will* be difficult to get something through the Senate due to moderate/purple state/blue dog Democrats, and folks haven't forgotten what happened to Democrats in the 1994 midterms after passing the AWB. Not to mention Harry Reid said they won't bring anything to a vote unless they have 60 votes because the last thing he & Democratic leaders want is vulnerable Senators on record with a YES vote, the thing not passing, then them getting hammered in their next election. This is a politically important point, because...

...if something DOES get through the Senate, everybody knows it will be even harder to pass through the Republican-controlled House.

So if something gets through the Senate with 60 votes and gets squashed in the House, Democrats can finger point at House Republicans and say "SEE, ITS THEIR FAULT" and paint the picture (as Obama did yesterday) that anyone who opposes these "common sense reforms" doesn't want to protect children and stop senseless mass violence.

Which they'll be happy to do going into 2014 midterms, knowing full well if Dems gain control of the House then they can pretty much pass whatever they want.

This is chess people...not checkers. And the Democrats have proven to be VERY good chess players the last few years.

There's no need for conspiracy theories, but there's also no need to get complacent and stop making your voice heard & position known to your representatives.

I wouldn't really call it a conspiracy theory, but to liken it to your argument part of a strategy which has a two fold advantage. It helps fire up their base, and may influence a portion of their opposition to loose enthusiasm. Indeed they are quite adept at chess. Their strategy is pretty clear, divide gun owners (this weapon is evil, while the rest are ok... for now), discredit the king (NRA), appeal to our parental sense of duty (it's for the children), use Alex Jones as a tool to paint us as being on the lunatic fringe, I could go on and on. They've run a very good smear campaign.

Unfortunately there are people among us who, whether knowingly or not, assist these efforts by telling us that nothing will happen and we don't need to worry. Many of them are new or relatively new members here. I sometimes wonder if there is a hidden agenda.

No, I don't think the agenda is all that hidden.

Evansville Courier and Press just had this in an article

Requiring universal background checks in gun sales
Compared to an assault weapons ban, there is far greater overall consensus around the issue of strengthening background checks by requiring them in firearm sales at gun shows and in other private transactions, to end the so-called "gun show loophole."
What polling shows: Eighty-eight percent of Americans said they support a law requiring background checks in sales at gun shows, according to the Washington Post-ABC News poll, including 89 percent of Republicans.
Odds of passage: 75 percent or better
