I like mosin 91/30 rifles. I am wondering are the m44s worth the extra money. I can almost buy 2 91/30s to 1 m44.Are they fun to shoot or too much recoil.

Depends why you want one, if it is just to shoot , get the 91/30, if you also want a handy carbine length rifle then get the m44, or better yet get an m38 or 91/59 and you wont have the added weight of a bayonet hanging on the end of the rifle. As for recoil, less length +less weight =more recoil and slightly less long range ( 200 yds +) accuracy.

I imagine the M44 will (and already has) appreciate in value faster and to a greater extent if that is a concern to you.

Seriously though OP, the carbines are a lot of fun to shoot. Especially if you have a chance to do it at dusk to get the full fireball effect. :D

I have both and the carbine is was way more fun and as stated above they have increased in value alot faster then the 91/30's due to availability. But if your on a budget and still wanting to the fun of a carbine, get a Chinese T53. I picked up a T53 at a gun shop in Evansville for $115 out the door

In reality, the M44 is one of the tamer Mosins for recoil.

M91s, and M39s are the heavy ones at 9.5#
M44s weigh 9.0# (remember heavy attached bayonnet)
    91/30s weigh 8.5#
    M38s, M91/38s, 91/59s weigh 7.5#

For the same ammo M91s and M39s have the least recoil.
For same ammo, M44s have less recoil than 91/30s.
For same ammo, M38s, 91/38s, 91/59s have more recoil than 91/30s and they feel like toys in comparison when you handle them.
    It's physics.

Why do people think M44s have such severe recoil?? Because the concussion from the shorter barrel is sufficently loud to shock you into thinking the recoil is severe. Shoot a lightweight carbine if you want to feel recoil, but only recoil similar to a Swiss K31 or other military carbine - nothing really unusual.

Fun is relative to what you call fun. The carbines are fun to shoot if you want to be macho and draw attention to yourself shooting lots of milsurp at the range with loud booms and fireballs - not particularly caring about accuracy. There is no criticism here. I know that's what some people get off on and there is room for all of us at the range! If fun is accuracy to you, then gravitate towards the M39s and 91/30s with pristine bores and stay away from carbines. I have a number of each type and the carbines almost always stay home. When I do shoot one of my carbines it is almost always a M38 or 91/59. However, my prettiest and "mintiest" Mosin is definitely the unissued Polish M44

    Hope this helps,

    Les

Just depends on what you want to do. the carbines are a bit less accurate the farther out you shoot. yes, the carbines do have a bit more recoil. I have several of both and I tend to shoot carbines more simply because I enjoy them more. Try shooting one at night and you'll see a 3 foot flame out the end of the barrel.

I love my M44. Is it the most accurate thing ever? No. Does the bolt work smoothly compared to other bolt guns? No. Can you get that kind of fire power anywhere else for $100 (2006 price), No.

Is it fun to shoot? Hell yeah!

thanks for all replies. I already have 2 91/30s and just wanting too add to collection sounds like values have went up since 2006.I possibly would buy an m44 if the price was right after hearing the replies.Does anyone think 91/30s will ever be over 200.

I'd say most definitely. When? I can't say, but I have seen them go from $89 to $159-169 in the past 3 years, although they can still be had for less. As someone mentioned above, if you want to try a carbine without paying the price of an M44, find a Chinese T53. They tend to be a little rough (sometimes a lot rough :):) on the outside, but if you check the bore, you can also find good shooters. Since they don't have the collector value that the M44's have, they can also make good candidates for refinishing. I have one that is a very good shooter. Prices have gone up for them also, but still not to the price point of an M44.

The fireball out of the M44 or the other carbine length Mosin's are worth the purchase :D. If your looking something to really get out an shoot IMO with go with a 91/30 if your just looking for something to pull out at the range to blast stuff with get you one of the carbine length mosin's.

I own a bunch of Mosin Nagants (pictured) & the M44 is one of the most fun to shoot guns I own.

The muzzle flash from the M44 is extreme when using this ammo if you can find it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a 91/30 over $200 NOW, IF it was one that had it's original finish, and wasn't just one of the "run of the mill" refinished worn out ones that LOOK new, like have been sold cheaply for the last several years.

For example, I have a Finnish 91/30 built on a hexagonal 1901 receiver that was built during WW 2 and has an excellent bore with original finish that I would NEVER sell for only $200.

You can get the 91/30 for $149.95 right here in IN. I bought 2 off of them a few months back. AGS Armament | Surplus Russian Mosin Nagant 91/30, 7.62X54R or you can get the Chinese Type 53 carbine for $129.95 at the same place. AGS Armament | Surplus Chinese Type 53 Rifle, 7.62X54R

I have both, a early $100 91/30 that's is awesome, but I was always looking for a m44. I picked one up about a yr ago, yes it is cost more and in my "opinion" worth every single penny. I'm currently looking for another m44 to alter or upgrade while leaving my first Izmash untouched. I have long considered my 91/30 the best for the $$ rifle ever. If you consider the cost of the rifle, $100, the firepower, from what I understand a Russian 30/06, the cost of ammo even in today's market , plus the long range capability, best for the $$ rifle I own. But I still prefer the M44, if I could only have one...

    You make my point.
These 91/30's are used rifles in various levels of wear that were cleaned up to look good.

The truly nice ones in new to excellent original condition were imported and sold LONG ago.

They will go over $200 eventually. Just find one with a special mark or rare mark and it will be over $200 now. I dont have a M44 but I will get one as soon as I find one that catches my eye.
