Killed this doe 11-29-14, ranged at 206. Double lung. Shot with my custom smokeless ML build. Savage Model 10 short action with accutrigger and jeweled bolt. Krieger 30" 1:20 .45 cal stainless bull barrel. A Richards thumbhole stock which is glass bedded and free floated with a 1" decelerator pad. Leupold 3-9 in Leupold rings and bases. Stainless trigger guard and stainless tactical bolt handle from Sharp Shooter Supply. Shoots a 275 gr Parker ballistic extreme at 2900 fps with 5000 ft lbs of kinetic energy. Ignition source is a Federal gold class large rifle primer seated in a 6.5x284 Lapua brass cut down with 73 grain IMR 4198. I have taken 2 deer over 200 yds with this in the past 2 seasons. Its a deer slayer. Still carries over 3000 ft lbs energy at 200 yds.

I suggest you get one. If you saw a ballistic chart of my rifle, you would be very impressed! I will take this over a HPR anyday!

73 grains smokeless powder would compare to 150 grains black powder i guess, havent shot 150 gr black powder in years though so I cant be a reliable source when asked that question

actually, i think the smokeless has more recoil, but my gun is heavier than a normal ML do to the real wood stock and heavy bull barrel, so i dont notice it as much. And a 1" decelerator pad works great!

What distance did you zero at? Great shot btw.

I believe I have it 1" high at 100 yds....It is a super flat shooter. I was messing around with a ballistics trajectory calculator the other day and If i have this rifle 3" high at 100 yds, its zero is 256 yds with a maximum point blank range of 296 yds....that is the furthest it will shoot without a holdover when high 3" at 100

It's really amazing what modern muzzleloaders, especially those smokeless rigs, can do.
It's always nice to see a perfectly placed shot, the sure sign of someone who respects his quarry.

6.5X.284? Can you tell INGO more about this? At what kind of ranges are you taking deer?

I almost started a fistfight a couple of years ago when I talked about the 6.5x.284.
