I was about to throw some wood into the stove and realized this wood was too pretty to burn, so I decided it was time I tried making my own grips.

I ran it through the planer.

then traced the pattern from the factory grips of my RIA 1911.

next I drilled the mounting hole, cut out the shape, then mounted them to a board so I could sand them to shape. I checked their match to the others frequently so I could make corrections as I went. After fit and finish were satisfactory I coated them with satin polyurethane.

I can't wait to try some more.

    Very nice!

[STRIKE]It does look like you made them for the wrong sides though. That cutout around the mag release is on the opposite side.[/STRIKE]

That side has to be cut because the mag release is oval shaped on that side, it protrudes when releasing a mag. :yesway:

    that does look pretty good!!

Looks like you were burning some tiger maple in your stove!! Good stuff!

Now, get some wood files and checker the grips ;)

    Excellent job!

I've found that if you want to bring the depth of the grain out when using a satin finish use a high gloss as your first 2 coats, then finish with satin.
