"...that had been stolen a few hours earlier"

That's going to make it tougher for his lawyer to explain.

    A whole lotta fail here.

    - Guy notices his car is missing at 7 pm.
    - Grabs a loaded rifle & drives around Nashville for two hours until he spots the stolen vehicle on a local highway.
    - Rams his stolen car with another vehile he owns, presumably causing damage to both.
    - Fires several rounds from the rifle into his the stolen car despite not being in immediate danger of death or bodily harm, causing more damage to his own (stolen) vehicle.
    - Does not pass "Go" / Goes directly to jail.

At least he shot the right car...that's gotta count for something.
Those horse thieves got off way too easy, they're still breathing.

    I vote him Guilty!!!
Fine him $1.00 and give him a carton of cigs and quart of Jack.
    That'll learn him.
And put a felony on his record? He should not get off but hopefully no felony.

Follow the car and call the police, let them do their job.

Will the insurance pay for him damaging his own car even if it was stolen? How soon before the kids parents sue him for damages?

It does not matter if INGO would not convict if no one from INGO will serve jury duty. Sam and Sally Snowflake would let the kids off because they suffered enough and push for the max against the evil gun owner.

Clearly he should be able to continue owning firearms.

And what happens if the stolen car had been sold already, and an innocent family got shot up.

Innocent yet buying a stolen car....I see what you mean but couldn't claim total innocence

Do you think being shot is appropriate punishment for stealing?

Shot in the groin for grand thefy auto......yeah I'll go with that. Might thin the gene pool and teach some lessons. Remember the report a few months back and all the GTA in Indy and how nothing ever happens over it? Could people get shot in the crotch, might teach people not to steal since they were never taught by someone

What he did was dangerous and could have harmed other people and truly innocent people.

However a thief getting some punishment, no problem in that

I don't get the logic of ramming your own car with another of your own cars...

    That seems kinda counter productive.

I can understand the urge to shoot the no good car thieves but the down side of that is a high price to pay for a few minutes of vengeance after glow.
