Yop, still can't start with a 1. They're running seriously short of them, even after they relaxed the restrictions. All you young whippersnappers with your pagers and cellphones and such. Probably not too many years before we face another digit, and the software implications of that would make Y2K look like a quick bug fix.

I think the old whippersnappers should have started with more digits in the beginning:D

Actually, the "Transylvania" served as the first two; they had names to stand for the exchanges. Kind of a quaint thing. Now, BR-549 really was only five.

How can we be running out of numbers to use? The population of Indiana is like 6.5 million. You could have 9,999,999 with the 812 area code alone. Am I missing something here?

Figure in the area code 9,999,999,999 that is 10 billion different possibilities

First, a lot of the numbers are off limits. Area codes and exchanges starting with 1, exchanges and area codes like 411, 611, 811, 911 (!). Then there are more than just one line per person. Our little family unit has 4 cell numbers and 2 landlines. Then you have businesses, .gov agencies, whatnot, many of whom have bunches of numbers, fax machines, phone company test lines, remote equipment accessed through phone lines... They're getting eaten up.

We need to completely ditch the old POTS system and just go with VoIP over IPv6. Then all phone numbers will be 32 hexadecimal digits long and there will be enough of them for every phone ever manufactured to have its own unique number for all eternity.
