At a gun show last weekend, overheard a person filling out a federal form ask about a new question "are you hispanic".
Anyone know or even guess why, especially when they ask your race on another part of the form?

I picked up a Mosin recently and I'm sure somebody will recall better than me - but I'm pretty sure there was a question that had two options: "Hispanic or Latino origin" and "Not of Hispanic or Latino origin."

Followed by asking for your race in a separate question, where I noted "White" (not 'Caucasian') was the very last option. xD

I looked up a copy of 4470 and didn't see the first question, but I swear I remember being surprised by it. Ooooh bureaucracy:laugh:

"Hispanic" is an ethnicity, not a race, which is why it is a separate question. Hispanics can be white, black or anything in between.

Correct. In the past census, many either self-identified as white or other and these questions were put into place to eliminate that issue. The "recent population explosion" of Hispanics is due, in small part, this reclassification.

Only question that should matter: Are you an American Citizen (Y) (N)

What if you are a non-citizen buying guns as non-citizens can do?:dunno:

Right, we've covered this. Hispanics can be of all different races.

The confusion is that most Americans confuse "Hispanic" with "mestizo".

You would think hispanic would mean tracing your heritage to spanish ancestors.

    This is correct.

Technically I am Hispanic, White as I have primary Spanish ancestry.

I'm doing my best to skew the gun buying stats to Hispanic :)

Nope, just finished another 4473 call in where "hispanic or latino" was marked in 10a and "white" in 10b.. I am 3 for 3 going to review but a proceed was outcome. looks like a "legal" way to profile. all of this started on July 1st 2012.

The government requires it for hospital reporting as well. I'm still not entirely sure why it is significant to have the ethnicity separated from race. Really, what's the point? Yes, as someone pointed out they are two different things but still, it seems like splitting hairs to me.
