I was curious about the upcoming movie so I wikied it to find more information. It tells the story of a pacifist, Desmond Doss, and his tale of being a medic in WWII during the Okinawa invasion. He is one of the few pacifists to win a Medal of Honor. Reading his citation for the award is breathtaking. The amount of raw, naked courage that he showed is a model for every person alive.

Wow, I had never heard of him. Now I want to see the movie! I liked what Gibson did with "We Were Soldiers", so I'm thinking it should be done well. Thanks for the history lesson! My dad was in the South Pacific in WWII (Seabees). He was two years older than Doss.

Doss estimated the number of lives he saved to be 50, but his commanding officer wanted to credit him with saving 100 lives, so they compromised at 75 (Library of Virginia).
