Obama Declares Time To Fix Health Care Is Now - Staying Healthy News Story - WRTV Indianapolis

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin -- President Barack Obama went to America's heartland Thursday to challenge critics of his proposed health care overhaul, warning that inaction would prove costly and asking: "What's the alternative?"

Obama has run into opposition from fellow Democrats in Congress and the nation's largest doctors' association.

Dismissing criticism, Obama attempted to sell his proposals directly to Americans. He did not directly respond to the American Medical Association's president, who remains unconvinced of the wisdom of the White House's call for a public health plan. Instead, Obama broadly described his critics as naysayers.

"I know there are some who believe that reform is too expensive, but I can assure you that doing nothing will cost us far more in the coming years," Obama said. "Our deficits will be higher. Our premiums will go up. Our wages will be lower, our jobs will be fewer, and our businesses will suffer."

The president's warnings come as reservations have been expressed by health care providers, Congress -- led by Obama's fellow Democrats -- and the public. During the brief ride from the airport to a town hall-style meeting, Obama passed several hundred protesters. Many held signs such as "NObama" and "No to Socialism."

White House aides brushed off the protests and instead focused on the president's message of the day: Inaction on health care overhaul is too dangerous to put off and would cost money the country simply doesn't have.

"I will not welcome endless delay or a denial that reform needs to happen," the president said in a speech that contained no new policy proposals but instead repeated oft-repeated generalities.

Obama has set an August deadline for an overhaul that has vexed Washington for decades.

It seems that many in his own Democratic party are against him... yet anyone who disagrees he dismisses as a "naysayer". What will it take to make this man LISTEN?!?!? :xmad:

He won't listen. We can only oppose him vehemently and hope that the ones in congress do their jobs. I am glad to see that there are some people standing up to him.

I'm guessing that you would, first, need to purchase him back from those who've bought his presidency. Then you'd probably have to give him some Ritalin & draw colorful pictures while speaking slowly.

Reform! Hell, he first needs to do something about the people that charge obscene prices for say a hospital bed, dressings, IV's, or stiches and see how much that alone would lower Americans health care premiums! Oh I forgot, those people have him in their pockets!:xmad:

It is an endless agenda when it comes to Health Care and when he gets it thru lets just see how much it saves us! (Choking on my own sarcasim)

I for one am tired of paying for everyone else, welfare, health care, useless politcians! I haven't been to a Doctor in almost 10yrs so why should my premiums keep going up?:dunno:

My brother in an engineer who has designed a lot of medical devices. The standards for design, manufacturing, packaging, and documentation in that industry are insane. All kinds of laws and regulations micro-managing every process in the plant, demanding everything be done in unnecessarily expensive and bassakward ways. Everyone in the building has to obtain and maintain all kinds of arcane certifications. The manufacturer has to pay ridiculous product liability premiums because if a 101 year old woman with diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure dies in that bed, it will be blamed on the company that made the bed and someone is going to want 10 or 20 million dollars in compensation.

The other day my brother was telling me about a device he hopes to get to the health care market for less than $200 each. He said if it was not health care, just making the same piece of plastic to sell at Wal Mart for people to work on their cars, he could put it on the market for $15.

It is not greed that drives high costs in medicine. It is the American expectation that nobody is ever supposed to die, and if they do, you're entitled to several million dollars in compensation.

    Great story. Repped.

Every single additional step/procedure/certification/insurance which we make necessary as a society adds to the cost of the goods & services we receive.

Our nation worships children & abhors natural/accidental death. We're so zealous in these things that we're ruining our lives & our standing in the world.

But...give to breast cancer research...because we've gotta save those 50 year old boobies! /s

    First the Stimulus Package.
Later he tells Congress Paygo. Don't spend money you don't have.
Now he wants to spend money we don't have.

    Obama is an idiot period.
