I've got a 15 year old S&W 638 that the clear coat looks like crap. I would like to strip the rest of the clear coat off and not sure how to do this? Would it hurt to soak the stripped down gun in acetone? S&W makes good functioning guns but the finish they put on many of these Airweights are BS. They said that I've used a cleaner that did this. Never used anything but oil to clean this gun :xmad: because I read years ago about this problem.

I had a 642 that did the same thing. I just sort of chalked it up to normal wear and tear. But maybe it wasn’t nearly as bad as what you are experiencing? Regardless I agree the finish seemed subpar.

Doesn't look bad stripped of that sh|tty clear coat. I may polish it with the big wheel someday or maybe not ;)
