Can't wear sandals where I grew up.

If you're foolish enough to think you can just watchout for the rattlers, then you have inch long thorns on about everything out in the scrub.

Sandals are for the boat or the island.

I've been shopping for some sandal type things as well.
I found some the look OK at first, but they have what looks like sewn in socks for some reason.

Still looking.

I had a similar pair for canoeing. Sand and small gravel would accumulate in the toe.

I could see that. I'll occasionally pick up a rock or a piece of stick that gets in the side holes. I liked these (or this style) for camping though just for a little extra toe protection.

Barring some freak cold snap, I'll be wearing shorts from here until it gets too cold in the fall (except when I have to go to the office).
